There is no bad month in the Maasai Mara — only months better suited to different priorities. Migration drama, big-cat behaviour, green-season photography and value for money peak at different points in the year, and choosing well matters more than choosing expensively.
July to October: the Great Migration
This is the window most travellers picture. Wildebeest and zebra push north out of the Serengeti, and the Mara and Talek river crossings become possible from mid-July onward.
- Highest crossing probability: the first three weeks of August
- Short grass, dry tracks and long sightlines
- Peak rates and peak vehicle numbers — book six to nine months ahead
Budget at least three nights inside the reserve or an adjoining conservancy if the crossing itself is your goal. One night turns a natural event into a lottery ticket.
November: short rains, thinning crowds
The herds drift back south and afternoon storms arrive. Skies turn dramatic, the plains green up within days, and lodges quietly drop their rates. Wildlife is still everywhere; you simply share it with fewer people.
December to February: resident game and clear light
A dry, bright stretch with excellent resident predator viewing. February is our quiet favourite — cheetah are active on short grass, birthing season is underway in the wider ecosystem, and mid-range lodges are genuinely affordable.
March to May: green season and best value
The long rains bring the lowest rates of the year and the most beautiful landscapes. Some seasonal camps close, and a few tracks get soft. If you accept an afternoon shower in exchange for near-empty plains and low prices, this is the smartest time to travel.
June: the shoulder month worth knowing
Grass is drying out, the first herds appear in the southern Mara, and rates have not yet jumped to August levels. For travellers who want migration atmosphere without peak-season pricing, June is the sweet spot.
